'93-'94 PRINCIPALS PICKED

The Pulaski County School Board has chosen its principals for the 1993-94 school year.

Linda Hill, principal at Draper Elementary School, will become principal for Newbern Elementary as well. Draper and Newbern will be the only schools in the system to share a principal.

Parents at Newbern expressed concern to the School Board May 13 that their school might be slated for closing when they learned that James Harvey, its principal, would not be reappointed. The board assured them that no decisions had been made regarding the closing of any school, except Jefferson Elementary School, which closed last week.

A committee will study how to adjust to the county's loss of about 100 students per year for the past five years and make recommendations to the School Board.

Michael Amstein, principal at Jefferson Elementary School, will become principal at Critzer Elementary next year.

Sandra Hussey, principal at Critzer, and Harvey will be leaving the system.

Contracts will be offered to the current principals at the county's other schools. The School Board approved the appointments at its meeting Tuesday night.

It also adopted its budget for 1993-94, adjusting to the limits imposed by the Board of Supervisors.

The School Board had recommended the addition of two psychologists or nurses as elementary counselors, at a cost of $80,000, but that was eliminated.

Shirley Cook, director of curriculum and instruction, reported on a survey of parents with children at the county's elementary schools on whether they would pay to use an extended day-care program before and after regular school hours.

"We did get quite a response," she said. "Quite a few have expressed interest in a day-care program, especially after school."

Superintendent William Asbury said limits on space at schools, following the closing of Jefferson and re-drawing of some attendance lines, have made it necessary to enforce attendance zones.

Previously, parents who worked had more flexibility in choosing schools for their children and could enroll them near babysitters or other family members for care outside of regular school hours.

The strict enforcement of attendance zones has worked a hardship on some parents, Asbury said, which is why the school system gauged interest in an extended day-care program. School facilities would be used and a private contractor would provide the service.

Bids from service providers probably will be sought within the next two months.
