RELIGION BRIEFS

HUNTINGTON COURT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH members have been recognized by the Roanoke City School administration for their sponsorship of an after-school enrichment program for pupils at nearby Oakland Elementary School. Begun six years ago, Discover has involved 15 members as volunteers. The program was a nominee for a Governor's Award for Volunteering Excellence and has involved many senior adults working with children.

\ THE REV. ALVORD M. BEARDSLEE, chaplain and religion faculty member at Hollins College for more than 30 years, has retired to Litchfield, Conn. Beardslee, a United Church of Christ minister, was active in many Roanoke Valley ecumenical and humanitarian projects.

\ DELIVERANCE CHURCH OF CHRIST will honor its pastor, the Rev. Lorraine Alston, on her 22nd anniversary of organizing the congregation at 2002 Mercer Ave. N.W. Elder Willie Murray of Beaufort, N.C., will speak Sunday at the 11 a.m. service.

\ REVIVAL SERVICES are scheduled tonight through Sunday at Maranatha Fellowship Church, 2715 Green Ridge Road. The Rev. Emmett Hinkley of Orlando, Fla., will preach at 7 p.m. service. The Sunday services will be at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Special music will be provided by the evangelist's family.

\ HOLLINS ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH, 3502 Old Hollins Road N.E., plans vacation Bible school Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7 to 9. Programs will be provided for both children and adults with a Family Night scheduled on June 27 at 7. Call 362-9569 for more information.

\ THE TRANSITIONAL LIVING CENTER has received $4,000 from the Board of Missions and Church Extension Inc. of the Roanoke District of the Methodist Church.

The center, operated by Total Action Against Poverty, provides housing to the homeless and relies on community donations for support. The donations are matched by a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
