RELIGION BRIEFS

RIC MASTEN, musician, poet and Unitarian minister from Carmel, Calif., will present a program July 25 at 10 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, 2015 Grandin Road S.W. The program is designed for adults and youth.

\ THE REV. WALTER LOCKETT JR. has been honored at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church for his 60 years in ordained ministry. Lockett is on the part-time church staff to assist with parish care. Reared in Oklahoma, he began his ministry in 1933 at an Arlington church. He served eight appointments in Virginia until his retirement from full-time ministry in 1974.

\ FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA, a patriotic musical with full orchestra accompaniment, will be presented June 27 at the 11 a.m. service at Cave Spring Baptist Church, 4873 Brambleton Ave. S.W. The program, for which casual dress is suggested, will replace the usual three services.

\ CRYSTAL SPRING BAPTIST CHURCH, 2411 Rosalind Ave. S.W., has scheduled its vacation Bible school Monday through Friday, nightly from 6:30 to 8:30. The final program will be part of a congregational picnic at Fallon Park starting at 5 p.m. Call 343-4204 for more information.

\ RALEIGH COURT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH will send Randy and Melinda Edwards to Haiti for a 10-day mission service trip. The couple will take gifts from their congregation to St. Croix Hospital and will leave July 5 after being commissioned by the congregation on June 27. This will be the first trip to Haiti for members of the church though it has sent other aid for several years.

\ SHAWN PEARCE, who will leave in July for two years of mission service in Quito, Ecuador, will speak June 27 at 9 a.m. for his home congregation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Cotton Hill Road. Pearce is a son of Scott and Sandra Pearce and is a 1992 graduate of Northside High School. Last year he attended Ricks College in Idaho.

\ RALEIGH COURT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 1706 Grandin Road S.W. is registering children for its vacation Bible school to be held July 12 to 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. It is open to those 4 years old through completion of fourth grade. Bible stories, music, games and crafts will be included. Call 344-6011 to register.

\ AN EVENING BIBLE SCHOOL is planned Monday through Friday from 6 to 8:30 at Morning Star Baptist Church, 1513 Rorer Ave. S.W. "Let's Go With Jesus" is the theme. Call 342-1159 to register or for more information.

\ THE REV. ALVORD M. BEARDSLEE, chaplain and religion faculty member at Hollins College for more than 30 years, has retired to Litchfield, Conn.

\ THE TRANSITIONAL LIVING CENTER has received $4,000 from the Board of Missions and Church Extension Inc. of the Roanoke District of the Methodist Church.

The center, operated by Total Action Against Poverty, provides housing to the homeless and relies on community donations for support. The donations are matched by a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
