RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. ALVORD M. BEARDSLEE, chaplain and religion faculty member at Hollins College for more than 30 years, has retired to Litchfield, Conn. Beardslee, a United Church of Christ minister, was active in many Roanoke Valley ecumenical and humanitarian projects.

\ THE TRANSITIONAL LIVING CENTER has received $4,000 from the Board of Missions and Church Extension Inc. of the Roanoke District of the Methodist Church.

The center, operated by Total Action Against Poverty, provides housing to the homeless and relies on community donations for support. The donations are matched by a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

\ RIC MASTEN, musician, poet and Unitarian minister from Carmel, Calif., will present a program July 25 at 10 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, 2015 Grandin Road S.W. The program is designed for adults and youth.

\ SHAWN PEARCE, who will leave in July for two years of mission service in Quito, Ecuador, will speak June 27 at 9 a.m. for his home congregation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Cotton Hill Road. Pearce is a son of Scott and Sandra Pearce and is a 1992 graduate of Northside High School. Last year he attended Ricks College in Idaho.
