IN SCHOOL

ELIZABETH J. MAXWELL, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, has been chosen as one of top 20 scholars in the country by the Scholars Recognition Program of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools for Mathematics, Science and Technology.

Maxwell, who also attends the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology, will receive a $2,500 scholarship. She plans to attend Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.

\ FINE ARTS STUDENTS at Virginia Western Community College exhibited their work at the college's annual Spring Fling.

Judged best in show was a piece titled "Coatrack of Doom" by John Spickard. John Emmons' sculpture "A Rose" was chosen for the President's Purchase.

In the graphics category, awards went to Ricky Shoemaker, first; Greg Banks, photography, second; Erin Barger, pencil-and-ink drawing, third; Marcie Killen, "Reflections of India," fourth; Holly Whitfield, color collage, fourth; Ann Ruel, "Pristine Chapel," fifth; and Clair Natt, watercolor, fifth.

Painting and sculpture category awards went to J.P. Beaton, "Descent into Spring," first; Amy Gillette, oil painting, second; J.P. Beaton, "Stage Kin," third; John Emmons, fourth; Rich Shoemaker, eyes collage, fourth; William Mahone, painting, acrylic/collage, fifth; and Dot Phlegar, fifth.

Honorable mentions went to Cheryl Whitfield, John Spickard, Charles Parrish and Windfield Marshall, graphics; and Bill Mahone, painting and sculpture.
