9TH 9-DAY CHAUTAUQUA UNDER WAY

The nine-day Chautauqua Festival in the Park is in the midst of its ninth year in Wytheville.

It started Saturday with several performers, including Percy Sledge, art and crafts shows and sales, a Civil War encampment, science show, puppetry and much more.

Activities will continue today with the launching of hot-air balloons at 7 a.m. from Wytheville Community College; a continuing tennis tournament; a children's movie at the Millwald Theatre; a vesper service at 4 p.m. featuring the Catron Family and Herman Weaver, formerly with the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks; and a balloon glow after dark at Factory Merchants Mall in eastern Wythe County.

Performers today include gospel singer and composer Joel Newton at 1 p.m., the Giannini Brass Quintet at 2 and 7 p.m., Piedmont Chamber Singers at 5 p.m., a performance of Anton Chekov's one-act play "The Boor" at 6 p.m. and the American Family Theatre presentation of "The Wizard of Oz" at 9 p.m.

"Women in the Eye of the Storm," a two-screen slide lecture by Nancy Cameron Armstrong, will be offered at 3 p.m. featuring quilts made during the Gulf War.

Kathy Dalton, a research fellow at the Institute for Parapsychology at Durham, N.C., will present a program on extra-sensory perception at 3 p.m.

Free programs and performances will continue in the Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park and elsewhere in Wytheville through next Sunday. A complete schedule of events is available from the Chautauqua office on Spring Street, the municipal building or the Chautauqua tent.

A pet show will be held Thursday and a petting zoo Saturday. A chess tournament will be held at the Ramada Inn next Saturday and Sunday, and a five-kilometer run on Saturday.

Creative Writing Day is Friday, with a workshop and contest awards. The speaker will be author and poet Jeff Daniel Marion of Tennessee.

The festival, started in 1985, is devoted to music, education and the visual and performing arts. Historical tours and a variety of foods are among the other attractions.

The festival is sponsored by the Wythe Arts Council.
