RUMLEY RUNS `4 CORNERS' TO PERFECTION

North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith would have been proud of Johnny Rumley on Saturday night.

Rumley played a "four corners" of sorts, using the sharp turns to his advantage, and won the 100-lap Late Model Feature at the New River Valley Speedway's Ford Dealers 200. Christiansburg's Ronnie Thomas finished second.

"We were gettin' the corners better than Ronnie," Rumley said. "He was gettin' the straightaways better. Getting those corners good is what helped me out."

Rumley took the lead from Thomas on the 61st lap.

Just before a caution flag was thrown on that lap, Rumley and Thomas were neck and neck. Racing officials determined that Rumley was in front.

It was a confusing night for Thomas. In second place on the 98th lap, he was told by his crew that there were three laps to go. Yellow flags had been thrown from laps 93 through 98, and Thomas' crew figured a green, a white and a checkered flag would follow. But since racing resumed before the 100th lap, there was a white/green combination flag for the 99th lap, and a checkered flag for the 100th.

Thomas said Rumley would have won even if there had not been any late caution flags. "He had us beat," Thomas said of Rumley. "I'll take second."

Chris Diamond finished third, and points leader Paul Radford was fourth.

In other races Saturday night:

Kenny Montgomery led all the way and won the 35-lap Limited Sportsman race. Christiansburg's Charlie Miles was second.

Salem's Jay McCray took the lead from Christiansburg's Tony Howell on the inside going into turn 3 on the fourth lap and won the 25-lap Mini Stock race. Howell finished second.

West Virginia's Grump Wills led throughout as he won the 25-lap Pure Stock race. Wills has won seven of the nine Pure Stock starts this season. Christiansburg's Tommy Allie finished second.

Eddie Rankin took the lead from Scott Brawley on the 20th lap and won the 25-lap Modified Mini race. But Rankin was disqualified because he refused a postrace inspection. Brawley was expected to be declared the winner.
