HUSBAND FACES SEVERAL CHARGES IN SHOOTING

A 25-year-old woman who suffered a gunshot wound during the weekend remained in stable condition Tuesday in a Roanoke hospital. Her husband has been charged with malicious wounding.

Joanne Thompson was shot in the face, and the .45-caliber bullet went through her neck and lodged in her shoulder, Wythe County Sheriff Wayne Pike said.

The shooting occurred Saturday outside her home at the Old Fort Trailer Park in the Stoney Fork section of the county. Thompson was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she underwent surgery to remove the bullet.

Her husband, James Lee Thompson, 32, faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and of using a gun to commit a felony.

He is free on $2,500 bond pending a preliminary hearing in General District Court. - Southwest bureau
