STUDENT AID PROGRAM GETS FEDERAL FUNDING

Wytheville Community College will get $243,099 from the U.S. Department of Education for its Student Support Services Program, said Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon.

The program offers support services to 225 students who are in the first generation of their family to attend college and who meet income eligibility requirements or have a physical disability.

The services include counseling, tutoring and advocacy services as well as providing information on other assistance for which students might be eligible.

Boucher said the program is starting its 23rd year at the school and has helped more than 3,000 students. - Southwest bureau
