OBIT BRAXTON, MARY EVELYN WILLIS

BRAXTON, Mary Evelyn Willis, 102, of Salem, formerly of Huntington, West Va., passed away Sunday, June 20, 1993, in Salem, where she was born Oct. 8, 1891. She was the eldest and last survivor of the six children of Martha Ellen (Spurlock) and James Henry Willis. She was the widow of Mr. Armand Braxton of Salem. She was a 1908 graduate of and former teacher at Douglass High School, Huntington, West Va. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Naomi Louise (James) Thorne; son-in-law, Dr. Hillary C. Thorne, New York; two grandsons, Hillary C. Thorne Jr. of Huntington, West Va.; Christopher Alden Thorne, United Nations Ambassador to Swaziland, Africa; granddaughter, Shirley Maria Thorne, New York; three great-grandchildren, Goeffrey Alden Thorne, Peter Christopher Thorne and Christa Naomi Vantu Thorne; three first cousins, Mrs. Mary Rayford Nelson, Mrs. Esther Rayford Lewis both of Salem, Mrs. Christine Rayford Miller, New Jersey; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Muriel Smith Willis of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Edna Smith Duckworth of Huntington, West Va.; a niece, Mrs. Joan Willis Smith of Columbus, Ohio; and a nephew, Captain Nelson L. Barnett Jr., U.S. Air Force (retired) of Huntington, West Va.; other cousins include, Mrs. Clara V. Evans and sister, Miss Remitha M. Spurlock of Institute West Va.; Mr. Albert Spurlock of Indianapolis, Mrs. Anita Louise White of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Harriett Spurlock Guiar of Los Angeles, Calif.; a host of additional relatives and friends.
