BLIPS ON THE MAP

Looking for a place to cool off? A quiet place to read a book? A bridge that wobbles when you walk on it?

Following are a few extra notables we found on our quest for favorite small-town features:

\ "The Big Hole," Arcadia - The creek is the Jennings, the temperature ice-cold. Locals around here know the most popular thing running on a 90-degree day is to check out this 13-foot-deep swimming hole. From the Arcadia exit on I-81, it's a half-mile past the closed Arcadia store on Virginia 614. Not recommended: the perilous running dive from the road, wherein local daredevils impress the girls by flirting with death - via the 10-yard spread of jutting, jagged rocks they have to dive over to get to the water.

\ The Glasgow Public Library - It used to be the post office, if that's any indication of size: darn-near postage stamp. It's so small that if a resident's sick, they'll deliver the books to their house. Thirty-five videos, 5,000 books, 10 books from the current 36 listed on The New York Times bestseller list. Most frequently checked-out authors: Stephen King, Danielle Steele. Located at 1015 Blue Ridge Road (catty-corner from the town hall, across from The Crossing bar/restaurant -home of a pretty darn good meatball sub).

\ The Swinging Bridge, Buchanan - This town is so enamored by its swinging, wooden foot bridge that when the flood of '85 took it down, they had it rebuilt in no time. Offers a great view of the James River. Access from U.S. 11/Main Street (near the car wash) or Virginia 43, from Bridge Street.

\ Killer Milkshake, Buchanan - The people at Waskey's Mill Grocery just south of Buchanan on U.S. 11 spare no calories with their version of a chocolate milkshake ($2, and worth every penny). Made with fat-laced ice cream, whole milk and mixed up the right way - with one of those old-timey green milkshake machines.
