BANDS PLAY TO BENEFIT AIDS COUNCIL

Fourteen bands will perform over two days at the Iroquois Club in Roanoke to benefit the AIDS Council of Southwest Virginia.

The Iroquois AIDS Benefit will begin Wednesday July 9 at 7 p.m. with six bands scheduled to play. The music will resume July 10 at 5 p.m., when the first of eight more bands will begin to perform.

The event has been organized by Mary Warden, a record store employee who says the idea came from a friend of hers who is a musician.

``A lot of people have wanted to do this for a very long time,'' she said, ``but they didn't know how to go about it.''

Most of the bands are from the Roanoke area. Two are from Lynchburg, and one is from Martinsville. They are performing for no pay.

Ted Ashby, director of the AIDS Council, said any proceeds from the music shows will probably be used in AIDS education programs such as the agency's home health parties, in which an AIDS educator teaches young women about safe sex and protection from AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The agency also offers support and technical assistance to several other AIDS service organizations in 29 counties in Western Virginia. Ashby said the rock music format will provide access to a group it much wants to educate.

``This audience is real hard to reach,'' he said. ``I hope this will lead into some other activities that will help us to reach them in the same way.''

The July 9 show will feature hard-core alternative music. The July 10 show will present one jazz group and several alternative bands. Original music will be emphasized.

Admission will be $5 for people over age 21 and $7 for those younger than 21. T-shirts commemorating the event will be on sale for $10.
