TALL ORDER AWAITING WEST GIRLS

The West girls look to continue their dominance of the Virginia High School Coaches' Association all-star basketball games tonight in Hampton, but it won't be easy.

The West has won five of the past seven meetings with the East in the girls' game, including the past two. But this year, the West must overcome the East's height advantage when it tries to stop 6-foot-2 La'Keshia Frett and 6-5 Angela Gorsica at 6:30 p.m. at Hampton Coliseum.

At 8:30, the West boys are heavy underdogs once again against the East. The West has lost 10 of the past 11 games, with the victory coming by a 92-82 score in 1990.

Frett, a high school All-American from Phoebus High School, has signed a letter of intent to attend Georgia. Gorsica, who led Wilson Memorial to the Group A state title, is headed to Vanderbilt.

The West girls are led by six Timesland players, including Group AA player of the year Sherry Banks of William Byrd, who has signed with Virginia Tech. However, the West has no player taller than 6-3 Tye Hall of Centreville.

Blacksburg's Katie Ollendick, the Timesland girls' athlete of the year, joins Banks on the West roster, along with George Wythe's Eve Kendall, William Fleming's Marqueetta Randolph, Cave Spring's Kim Stewart and Radford's Michelle Wyms.

The entire West coaching staff is from Timesland: Cave Spring's Linda Long, Blacksburg's Mickey McGuigan, Fort Chiswell's Danny Jonas and George Wythe's Mary Copenhaver.

In boys' basketball, the East will be led by Hampton's Damon Bacote, John Marshall's Edmund Sherod and Maury's Joe Smith. All three were All-Group AAA selections, and Smith is headed to Maryland on a basketball scholarship.

The West counters with South Lakes' 6-10 Joey Beard, the tallest player in the game and an All-Group AAA selection. He will attend Duke.

Timesland players on the West roster are Fleming's Carlos Rhodes and Jemare Crump, Pulaski County's Chris Foster, Alleghany's Michael Hunter and Laurel Park's Lonzy Robertson.

Christiansburg's Gerald Thompson is a member of the West coaching staff.

The coaches' association all-star games in softball and baseball will be played Wednesday. The football game will be held Thursday. The VHSCA coaches' clinic will run today through Thursday. The games and the clinic will be held in Hampton.
