SHERIFF SUED, ACCUSED OF 2 POLITICAL FIRINGS

Two former deputies claim they were fired by Sheriff David K. Mapp for political reasons, and one has retaliated with a $1 million federal lawsuit.

Harry L. Swindell, a captain with 13 years of experience in the city jail, filed the suit in U.S. District Court, claiming his free-speech rights were violated. He claims Mapp learned he was supporting another candidate in the sheriff's race and fired him.

Jose L. Olivo, 34, was fired July 13 after refusing to contribute $40 to Mapp's campaign for "religious and ethical reasons," he said. Olivo said he also is considering legal action.

Mapp's lawyer, Andrew Sacks, said Monday he could not comment because he had not yet reviewed the suit.
