KINSTON TAKES 2 FROM BUCS

Kinston pitchers held the Salem Buccaneers to 10 hits and two runs in two games Tuesday as the Indians swept a Carolina League doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 2-1.

In the first game, Kinston's Matt Williams earned the complete game victory, allowing four hits over seven innings. Williams walked four and struck out five.

Salem's Angelo Encarnacion doubled home Kevin Polcovich in the third inning, but Joe Ronca hit into a double play to spoil a big inning.

Marc Marini hit a sacrifice fly and Chop Pough hit an RBI double in the second inning to give Kinston an early 2-0 lead. John Cotton drove in a third-inning run with an infield hit and Juan Andujar hit his third homer of the season in the fourth inning to finish out the scoring for Kinston.

In the second game, three Indians pitchers combined on a six-hitter, and the Bucs couldn't capitalize on opportunities. With Salem trailing 2-1, Trace Ragland grounded into a sixth-inning double play and Ken Bonifay struck out with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh.

Ian Doyle recorded the strikeout to pick up his 18th save of the season. Doyle and David Welch preserved the win for Carlos Crawford.

Losing pitcher Eric Parkinson allowed just two hits in 4 innings, but he hurt himself with four wild pitches.

Mike Brown drove in Salem's run with a single in the top of the fourth inning.

Kinston led 1-0 in the second inning after Mark Charbonnet's RBI single to center. After Brown's hit tied the score, the Indians got the winning run in the bottom of the fourth. Rod McCall singled home Marini, who had walked and taken second and third on wild pitches by Parkinson. \
