DEFENSE CONVERSION TOWN-MEETING TOPIC

The Radford Army Ammunition Plant will host a town meeting Friday to discuss federal funding available to help ammunition plants attract commercial work.

Rand Fishbein, a staff member with the Subcommittee on Defense of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, will participate in the meeting at noon at the Best Western Red Lion Inn in Blacksburg.

The purpose of the meeting is to promote awareness of the ARMS act, which provides $200 million for attracting commercial work to government-owned, contractor-operated facilities like the Radford arsenal. It was passed by Congress last year.

Under the ARMS act, government-contractors - like Hercules Inc. at the Radford plant - are permitted to produce commercial products on government property.

The contractor also may open the plant to subcontractors interested in leasing manufacturing space at the arsenal.

Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, said 18 companies have expressed interest in locating at the Radford arsenal. Because of cuts in defense spending, the arsenal has laid off more than 2,000 workers in the last two years.
