STORM PUTS 700 IN DARK, INCLUDING AT HOSPITAL

A storm that swept through the New River Valley on Monday knocked out power for about 700 Appalachian Power Co. customers.

Customers near the Christiansburg Industrial Park along U.S. 460 lost power at 4:25 p.m., said Glenda Wohlford, spokeswoman for Apco's Pulaski Division. By 7:30 p.m., some power had been restored.

The cause had not been determined. The outages may have been caused by lightning, Wohlford said.

Customers without power included Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. A spokeswoman said the hospital operated for several hours on back-up generator power. The outage caused no major problems, she said.
