GOLF TOURNAMENT TO AID GRETNA SOFTBALL TEAM

The Gretna Fast-Pitch softball team will hold a benefit golf tournament Aug. 7 at Beaver Hill Golf Club in Martinsville to raise money for its trip to a national tournament in California.

Four-person teams will compete in an 18-hole captain's choice tournament.

Money will be awarded to an area charity of the winning team's choice. Prizes will be awarded to the top eight teams, and for the longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contests.

Entry fee is $40 per person, which includes greens fees and cart. Entry deadline is Aug. 2.

The softball team will be competing in the national ASA Class B softball tournament Sept. 2-6.

The Roanoke Star White under-15 soccer team beat a club team from Katernberg, Germany, 2-0 Thursday in a match played at the Wedau Sports School in Essen, Germany.

Brooks Berry scored both goals on assists by John Prillaman. Michael Creasey recorded seven saves for the shutout. The Star is 2-1 on its European trip.

The Florida Marlins will hold a tryout camp Saturday at 9 a.m. at Cave Spring High School for players 16-22. American Legion players must have written permission from their coach or post commander.
