John Mellencamp, who has sung for beleaguered farmers, will hold three concerts next week for victims of the Midwest flooding.

Proceeds from the Concerts for the Heartland - July 28 in Chicago, July 29 in suburban Indianapolis and July 31 in St. Louis - will go to the Red Cross.

Concertgoers also are asked to bring food, clothing and water for flood victims.

"In a time of adversity, it takes good neighbors and perfect strangers to meet difficult needs," Mellencamp said. "And to me, rock 'n' roll has always meant a sense of community."

Mellencamp, a Seymour, Ind., native who lives near Bloomington, has participated in Farm Aid concerts. And in 1982, he gave a free show for 20,000 high school students in Fort Wayne who helped fill sandbags during flooding there.
