THE TIPOFF

DAREDEVILS: The Flying Wallendas, a noted troupe of aerialists, are performing free two or three times per day during the Rockbridge Regional Fair that's under way through Saturday at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington.

They are just part of the entertainment at the fair. Other attractions include the Dave Martin Championship Rodeo tonight and Saturday night at 7:30, racing pigs, ducks and goats and a sheep dog demonstration Saturday afternoon at 2.

The fair is full of fair stuff, too, from 4-H demonstrations to midway rides. Daily admission is $5 per carload of people. Call 463-6263 for the rundown.

TROLLEY SONG: That's one of the compositions featured in ``Meet Me in St. Louis,'' the stage musical opening tonight at 8 at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. It will continue Saturday night,

July 30 and 31 and August 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. Matinees will be Sunday and Aug. 1 and 8 at 2 p.m.

The story involves the move of the Smith family in 1904 from St. Louis to New York City. Familiar tunes include ``Meet Me in St.Louis,'' ``The Boy Next Door'' and ``Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.''

Tickets are $15 for adults, $11 for senior citizens and contributors to the center and $8 for students and children. Call (804) 846-3804.

DOUBLE PLAY: Stowe and Lowe will perform at 12:15 p.m. today in Roanoke's Crestar Plaza as part of the Brown Bag Arts Series. Their Afro-fusion shows include rhythms, chanting, fables and storytelling. The event is free. The series will continue through Aug. 27. Here is the schedule:

SPICY: The Sauerkraut Band will play a concert tonight at 6 on the law of Henderson Hall at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Admission is free.

ORGANIC: The organ recital series of the American Guild of Organists in Roanoke continues with a performance Sunday afternoon at 3 by Robert Chapman at First Presbyterian Church. The series continues Aug. 1 with Steve McConnell playing at Cave Spring Methodist and Aug. 8 with Steve Wooddell at First Baptist Church. Admission is free.

SERENE: The annual arts and crafts festival of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival in Orkney Springs will be today and Saturday and July 30 and 31 on the lawn of the Orkney Springs Hotel in Orkney Springs.

It's a low-key gathering of some 50 artisans selling Shaker furniture, pottery, children's swings, pottery and the like. The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra will present a pops program in the outdoor pavilion tonight and July 30. Classical works will be played Saturday night and July 31. A free children's program called ``Carnival of Animals'' will be held Saturday afternoon.

SEXY AND SARCASTIC: That's what they're calling the musical ``Threepenny Opera,'' which will be presented through August 14 at Live Arts in Charlottesville. Doors open at 7:15, the play begins at 8 and sandwiches will be available to theatergoers, who will be seated at tables. Tickets are $8 and $10. Call (804) 293-7595.

GUMBO: Wayne Toups and Zydecajun, said to be the first Cajun artists to hit the Billboard charts, will perform in concert at Lime Kiln Arts Sunday night at 8. Their stuff is said to be hot, hot, hot. Tickets are $12. Call 463-3074.
