Defense-conversion fund requests filed

Virginia officials have filed a package of proposals with the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency that will allocate $470 million nationwide to help with defense conversion efforts.

The package consists of 13 public-sector proposals and 15 from private companies.

Susan Joseph of the state Department of Economic Development would not specify which companies had submitted proposals. But she said money was sought to help convert night-vision products technology used at ITT's Electro-Optical Products Division in Roanoke County. ITT officials couldn't be reached for comment.

Joseph said the public proposals seek funding for such initiatives as the Southwest Virginia Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center and the Virginia Manufacturing Extension Service. - Staff report
