U.S. TOPPLES FRANCE TO WIN UNDER-22 TITLE

Wesley Person of Auburn scored 14 points and the United States beat France 87-73 on Saturday to win the Under-22 World Basketball Championship in Valladolid, Spain.

The United States, coached by Mike Jarvis of George Washington, trailed 11-5 after 11 minutes, but then went on a 38-15 run to lead by 17 points at halftime. France couldn't get closer than 10 after that.

"Our defense is pretty good," Jarvis said. "When we play as a team we play pretty good."

Othella Harrington of Georgetown and Corliss Williamson of Arkansas scored 13 points apiece, and Virginia's Cory Alexander added eight points for the United States. Yann Bonato led France with 21.

Brazil edged Italy 79-76 on Saturday to finish third in the 12-nation tournament. Greece beat Argentina 83-81 for fifth place and Spain defeated Australia 89-76 for seventh.
