BASKETBALL-ROANOKE STARS LOSE IN AAU POOL PLAY

Kristin Smith scored 10 points and Mandy Williams added nine Saturday to lead the Roanoke Stars 13-and-under girls team in a losing effort in pool play at the AAU National Tournament in Maryville, Tenn. Fencor, a team from Philadelphia, defeated the Stars 56-41.

Roanoke led early, but Fencor went on a run with four minutes left in the first half and took a 28-18 halftime lead. The Stars narrowed the margin to six points in the second half, but were unable to regain the lead.

All-American Jen Zenszer led Fencor, the second-place finisher in last year's tournament, with 18 points.

The Roanoke Stars will face a Canton, Ohio, team and an Alabama team in pool play today.
