ROANOKE SWIMMERS QUALIFY FOR EASTERN ZONES

Swimming in the Age Group championships at Riverside Wellness Center in Richmond, Laura Webb of the Roanoke Valley Gators qualified for the U.S. Swimming Eastern Zones championships in two events.

Webb won the 10-and-under girls 100-meter backstroke in a national top 16 time of 1 minute, 17.79 seconds and the 50 breast stroke in a top 16 time of 40.69. She also finished third in the 50 butterfly.

In the 10-and-under boys competition, Brett Fonder won the 200 freestyle in a top 16 time of 2:29.38 to qualify for the Eastern Zones. Tyler Gustafson finished third in the 50 butterfly.

In the 11-12 girls competition, Emily Whichard won the 11-12 girls 200 freestyle in a top 16 time of 2:15.95 to qualify for the Eastern Zones and placed fifth in the 100 backstroke. Tracy Pannell finished fifth in the 50 breast stroke and Whichard, Pannell, Jamie Spradlin and Emily Mullett placed sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.
