ACTION ON, OFF THE TRACK AT FCS

The fields were full for every race at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday night, but the biggest pack ran outside the track.

At approximately 8:35 p.m., more than 20 Virginia State Police and Franklin County Sheriff's Department vehicles - some unmarked - arrived at FCS en masse.

After observing the crowd for about 90 minutes, the law enforcement officers left quietly.

"I think they were disappointed they didn't find more trouble," track promoter Whitey Taylor said, "especially considering we had a full house and they only wrote a few tickets for drinking in public."

On the track, Tim McGuire and Harvey Harrison were among the competitors who eluded their pursuers. McGuire and Harrison each won a 50-lap Late Model segment of the eighth annual All Pro Auto Parts/J-93 FM 300, earning a $1,000 check.

McGuire posted the best qualifying time and led throughout the first race. McGuire's biggest challenge came from his brother, Tony, who finished second. Harrison finished third, and 18-year-old Todd Philpott was fourth.

The victory was Tim McGuire's second of the year.

The first four finishers were inverted for the second race, putting Philpott on the pole. Tony McGuire assumed the lead on the fifth lap, but when he developed a flat tire 13 laps later, McGuire lost the No. 1 position to Harrison.

Tim McGuire rallied to finish second. Dicky Wilson, the 1992 points champion, was third, and current points leader Dudley Lawhorn placed fourth.

"I want to congratulate Harvey Harrison on running a really good race," Tim McGuire said, "and we're happy to get a first and a second tonight."

Harrison, who registered the second-best qualifying time, has three victories this season and is fifth in the points race.

In the Rookie race, points leader Steve Hurley weaved his way through a handful of cars that qualified in front of him and won handily. Jimmy Wilson, third in points, finished second, and Josh Ingram, back from a four-week suspension, placed third.

Jimmy Mullins overtook Street Stock points leader Phillip VanDerVeer on the 20th lap en route to his third consecutive victory. VanDerVeer finished second, and Dale Marlowe, eighth in points, placed a season-best third.

Mini Stock points leader Steve Lynch expanded his lead with a victory. Steve Lam was second, and Tommy Dean finished third. - Staff report
