OBIT BENNETT, GEORGE ALTON

BENNETT, George Alton, 66, of Route 4, Rocky Mount, died Saturday, July 31, 1993, in a Roanoke hospital. Mr. Bennett was a native of Greensboro, N.C., a son of the late George R. and Thelma C. Bennett. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Bennett and Garland Bennett. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1950 in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked in textile from 1950 to 1977 and then started Bennett Insurance Associates. Mr. Bennett was a 41 year mason, a Past Master of Isaac Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M., Boones Mill, a member of Revolution Lodge #552 A.F. & A.M., Greensboro, N.C., Past Patron of Etta Chapter #185 O.E.S., Roanoke, Past Patron and member of Rebecca Chapter #84 O.E.S., Boones Mill, a member of Elmwood Royal Arch #33, Baynard Commandery #15, Knight Templer, Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies and Choir, Kazim Temple, Past President of the Kazim Chanters, Past President and member of the Kazim First Aid Unit. He was a member of the Fairmont Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School Teacher and was a member of the Choir. On May 8, 1988, he received a heart transplant at M.C.V. in Richmond. Surviving are his wife, Katie W. Bennett; two sons and one daughter-in-law, George A. Bennett II of Greensboro, N.C. and R. Stephen and Suzanne Bennett of Asheboro, N.C.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Deborah and Rick Changie and Tina Bennett, all of Greensboro, N.C., Tanya and Ricky Wampler of Rocky Mount; nine grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Robert and Rosemond Bennett of Drivers and Carson and Jane Bennett of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucile and Sam Lewis, Inez and John Covert and Irene and Bill Capps, all of Greensboro, N.C.; his father and mother-in-law, Roy and Lyda Weddle. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at the Gogginsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steven Greer and the Rev. Robert Schneider officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairmont Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Boones Mill Rescue Squad, or the Callaway Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral Service, 342 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
