LEAVE ROOM FOR THE OUTLANDISH

CONGRATULATIONS Roanoke! You have been successfully catapulted into either the ``good ol' days'' or the ``Orwellian future,'' although I'm not quite sure which. The one thing I'm sure of is that censorship is rearing its ugly, bulging, pus-filled head in the Roanoke Times & World-News.

``Outland,'' a comic strip in the Sunday edition is being cancelled after Aug. 8 because executive editor Forrest Landon feels it is ``seldom funny and extremely tasteless'' (July 25 statement).

Excuse me! Hello? I don't remember having a vote. Just because you do not get the joke does not mean you can just cancel it and replace it with two disgustingly sweet and politically correct comic strips (``Where's Waldo'' and ``Curtis''). Mind you, I have no love for either of the new strips, but I also would not eliminate them from a newspaper based on my personal tastes or some holier-than-thou Puritan belief.
