REAGAN ALLY ANNOUNCES FOR SENATE

James Miller, a former budget chief and chairman of the Federal Trade Commission under President Reagan, said Thursday he will run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Charles Robb.

"For the past several months I've been testing the waters to determine whether the people of Virginia would be receptive to the kind of leadership I displayed while serving under President Reagan," Miller said in a statement.

"Well, I'm through exploring. My fellow Virginians want my assistance and I am ready to serve."

Robb is up for a second term in next year's election. Gov. Douglas Wilder plans to oppose Robb for the Democratic nomination.

Former Iran-Contra figure Oliver North and former U.S. Attorney Jay Stephens are likely to vie against Miller for the GOP nomination.
