OBIT DONALD, DR. PATILLO ELIZABETH

DONALD, Dr. Patillo Elizabeth, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, August 19, 1993, at the University of Virginia Hospital, of Malignant Melanoma, the deadly form of skin cancer. She was the beloved wife of Joe Tucker, mother of Grace Patillo Cole and cherished only child of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Donald of Lexington, Virginia. Patillo was born September 15, 1950, and grew up at Meadowview in Rockbridge County. Her great-grandparents immigrated from Ireland to the area. Patillo attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Human Nutrition from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University of Blacksburg, Virginia and the Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Virginia and in 1980 joined the Nutrition Support Service of the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia. She continued in this position and was an Assistant Professor of Surgery. She was a Registered Dietitian and Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian. Also, she was Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia. Patillo was President-Elect, 1994-1995 of the Virginia Society of Parental and Enteral Nutrition and in 1992 was elected to membership in three honorary societies: the American College of Nutrition; the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, and the American Institute of Nutrition. At the University of Virginia, she was a member of the Medical Center's Nutrition Committee. Patillo was an old-time fiddler, square-dance caller and clog-dancer. She spent most of her non-working hours participating in the activities of the "old time" music community for which both Albemarle and Rockbridge Counties are meccas. She held a teacher's certificate in piano from the Sherwood Conservatory in Chicago, Illinois and gave private piano lessons in her home. Patillo was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church and the Tabor Presbyterian Church in Crozet. Beside Patillo's husband, daughter and parents, she is survived by her in-laws, Colonel and Mrs. Earl Tucker, of Charlottesville, Virginia and Kitty Hawk, North Carolina; her former husband and Grace's father, William M. Cole of Charlottesville, Virginia; her former parents-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. James Cole Jr., of Charlottesville, Virginia; and a lifelong friend, Mrs. Sara Deaver O'Hare, formerly of Lexington, Virginia and presently living in Charlottesville. Memorial services will be Saturday, August 21, 1993, at 3:00 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Charlottesville, Virginia and Sunday, August 22, 1993, at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of the Lexington Presbyterian Church, Lexington. In remembrance of Patillo, friends are asked to provide emotional support to the family over the years as they attempt to cope with their devastating loss. A trust for Grace was established by Patillo. Those wishing to contribute may make checks to the Patillo E. Donald Trust Fund and mail to 616 Big Oak Road, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903.
