OBIT-SAUNDERS, HILARY ABBOTT

SAUNDERS, Hilary Abbott, 80, of 896 Burks Hill Road, Bedford, died unexpectedly Saturday, August 28, 1993, at his residence. He was born in Bedford County on February 18, 1913, a son of the late William Abbott Saunders and Edna Riley Hawkins Saunders. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, and also served as custodian for several years. He was a member of Liberty Lodge #288 Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the American Legion Post #54. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie S. Layman and Lelia S. Overstreet. He is survived by his wife, Mary Quarles Saunders; a nephew, William Burke Robertson of Bedford; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Linda and Lionel W. Toms of Bedford; two grandsons, John W. Toms and Jason L. Toms, both of Bedford; three sisters, Virginia S. Wickham of Bedford, Martha S. Whitesell of Roanoke and Mary S. Mitchell of Vinton; three brothers, James H. Saunders of Roanoke, W. Riley Saunders of Bedford and J. Spott Saunders of Salem; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 30, 1993, at 11 a.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family suggests those wishing to make memorials consider Main Street United Methodist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
