OBIT-JOHNSTON, FRED R.

JOHNSTON, Fred R., 86, of Marion, died Friday, August 27, 1993 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. He was born August 27, 1907 in Marion and attended Emory and Henry College. He was the son of the late W. R. and Georgia Copenhaver Johnston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Libby Anderson Johnston. He retired in 1972 after 45 years with the Marion Post Office, having served as Postmaster from 1946 to 1952. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John A. and Virginia Johnston of Pulaski; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Johnston Shriver and James Shriver, Cary, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Peterson, Richmond, and Mrs. Katherine McCullough, Newberry, S.C.; four grandchildren, Robert RheaJohnston, Barboursville, Steve and David Shriver, Raleigh, N.C., and Elizabeth Shriver Thornton, Huntsville, Ala. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 1993 at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Libby and Fred Johnston Memorial Music Fund at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 222 W. Main Street, Marion, Va. 24354. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
