LINDA E. SMITH has been awarded the Secretary's Hands and Heart Award at the Salem VA Medical Center. Smith is a social worker in the ambulatory care section of the center. The award is given annually to an outstanding employee whose patient care is exceptional.

\ KAREN SUE HENLEY, vice president of the Salem chapter of the American Business Women's Association, has been named the 1993 Woman of the Year by the chapter.

Selection was based on her career accomplishments, education, community involvement and participation in the association.

Henley is a graduate of Virginia Tech and is the loan officer for Southwestern Telco Federal Credit Union.

\ BRUCE HARTMAN of Roanoke received the Driver of the Year Award at the annual Southern States dinner for outstanding safety, service, and dedication in his four years of driving for Southern States.

\ SHERRY REYNOLDS, activities director at Our Lady of the Valley Retirement Community, has won honorable mention in the National Nursing Home Week category for the D.A. "Woody" Brown Award. This award is presented by the Virginia Health Care Association to recognize excellent activities programs throughout the state.

\ BESSIE IRELAN of Salem has received the Circle of Achievement Award at the Mary Kay Cosmetics Seminar in Dallas. She received the award for reaching $300,000 in unit retail sales during the contest year.

\ DOROTHY S. WILLIAMS has been named director of development and major gifts at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. Williams formerly was director of development at Roanoke College.

\ DAVID CHRISTIAN, vice president of Roanoke Office Furniture Inc., recently received the "Rookie of the Year" award from G.B.S. Filing Systems, a national office-systems distributor.

Christian received the award for producing the highest sales volume of G.B.S. products within his first two years with the company.

\ JAMES T. HULLETT of Blue Ridge has successfully completed the certified arborist examinations administered through the International Society of Arboriculture and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of ISA.

Hullett is employed with Paul Bunyan's Tree Service Inc.

\ THE ASSOCIATION FOR RETARDED CITIZENS has received a $9,000 grant from the Knights of Virginia Assistance for the Retarded.

ARC will purchase a heat tunnel for an L-sealer with the funds, which will enable ARC to serve more companies in the valley by wrapping merchandise and other products in cellophane for future distribution and sale.

ARC, a United Way agency, employs and trains approximately 130 mentally and, in some cases, physically disabled adults.

\ PAUL L. CURRAN, the Edward D. Jones & Co. investment representative in Salem, has accepted an invitation to become part owner of the Jones Financial Cos., the holding company for the St. Louis-based financial services firm.

Curran has been with Jones since 1987. He will continue serving Salem in his new capacity.
