U.S. SUING SECORD FOR IRAN-CONTRA MILLIONS

The U.S. government is seeking anew to recover millions of dollars from the secret sales of arms to Iran stowed in Swiss bank accounts by retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Secord and business partner Albert Hakim.

The Justice Department contends that proceeds from the arms sales - estimated at more than $10 million - belong to the Treasury because Secord and Hakim received the funds while working as government agents.

Government lawsuits against Secord and Hakim were filed Tuesday in federal court in Alexandria, Va., and Monday in a court in Geneva, Switzerland.

The money is left over from the secret efforts in 1985 and 1986 to sell arms to Iran to gain the release of U.S. hostages held in Lebanon.
