TECH GOLFERS WEATHER STORM TO SET RECORD

Virginia Tech overcame heavy weather to set a modern-day school record for a 54-hole event while finishing seventh Tuesday at the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Intercollegiate Golf Tournament.

Houston won the team title with an 854 total, and the Hokies were 15 strokes back at 869 after a final round that was delayed for 90 minutes because of violent thunderstorms and 2 inches of rain.

Maryland's Del Ponchock, who completed his round before the storms hit, won the overall title with a three-round total of 16-under-par 216 at Osprey Point Golf Course. Brian Sharp led the Tech contingent, tying for 11th at 1-under 215. Radford native Matt Martin was next for the Hokies with a 217 total, and Wytheville's David Havens finished at 223.

In other golf:

Lord Botetourt's Mark Sweeney fired a 2-over-par 73 to earn medalist honors, and William Byrd won the Blue Ridge District regular-season title at Blue Hills. The title gave Byrd a bye into the Group AA Region III tournament.
