Downtown Roanoke elects officers

DOUGLAS C. WATERS, regional executive of NationsBank of Virginia, has been elected president of Downtown Roanoke Inc. for the 1993-1994 term. MICHAEL M. WALDVOGEL, president of Waldvogel, Poe & Cronk, was elected vice president for administration, government relations and membership services; ROBERT C. LAWSON JR., president of Crestar Bank in Roanoke, was elected secretary; and ROBERT G. BENNETT, senior vice president of Grand Piano & Furniture Co., was elected treasurer.

Downtown Roanoke Inc. is a 33-year-old private, nonprofit downtown economic development organization.

BANKING

Charter Federal Savings Bank promoted RICHARD W. BUCHANAN to executive vice president of finance and credit administration. Buchanan has been associated with the thrift for 17 years. Prior to his promotion, he was senior vice president and corporate asset manager.

BUSINESS SERVICES

\ PAUL HUGHS recently opened Time+Plus of Roanoke, an electronic payroll and timekeeping system which uses magnetic strip and bar-code technology to streamline payroll and labor-costing operations. Hughs was formerly the owner of a trucking company.

EDUCATION

\ JENNIFER M. LACHOWICZ has been appointed marketing education coordinator at Jackson River Technical Center in Covington. She will work with businesses to develop training agreements and plans, and to provide on-the-job training for marketing education students.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

\ WILLIAM L. TERRY and CHRIS E. THOMAS have been named personal financial planners with the Roanoke office of IDS Financial Services Inc. Terry previously was employed with American Health Services. Thomas previously was employed with a national brokerage firm.

INSURANCE

\ THOMAS O. MAXFIELD has been named president of Carilion Health Plans, the managed-care division of Carilion Health System. JANET NILES has been named director of utilization and quality management of the division, and DIANE RINEHARD has been named director of provider relations. Before joining Carilion, Maxfield worked for Metropolitan Life of Westport, Conn; Niles formerly was employed with Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co.; and Rinehard was network development administrator for Aetna Life and Casualty for Virginia.

Carilion Health Plans establishes a network of physicians and hospitals who provide competitive fees for those companies that exclusively use the network.

LAW

\ FREDERICK THEODORE SCHUBERT II has joined the law firm of King & Higgs in Roanoke. Schubert is a graduate of of the University of Virginia and an honors graduate of the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., where he was a member of the Cumberland Law Review. He was formerly associated with the Richmond-based law firm of Goddin, Major, Schubert & Hyman.

ORGANIZATIONS

The Old Dominion Communications Association, the Roanoke-based organization of telecommunications professionals from central and Southwest Virginia, has named its board of directors and officers for a term beginning Oct. 1. New board members are GARDNER SMITH of Roanoke County; RON WADE of Roanoke; AL BECKLEY, retired from Roanoke; immediate past president VERN DANIELSEN of Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern; and KITTY AMMEN of AT&T. New officers are TED CLARK of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia, president; BENNY BANTON of Roanoke Memorial Hospital, vice president; KAREN MARTIN of Radford Hospital, secretary; and MAUREEN STUMP of Moores, treasurer.

RETAIL

\ C. SCOTT LAUGHON has been named manager for A.C.S. Home Entertainment Gallery. He was previously employed with Grand Piano & Furniture Co.

Acme Markets of Virginia, a grocery chain based in Tazewell, has appointed \ ROBERT DOWNUM as chief operating officer for the company's 10 stores in Southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia.

Downum formerly was vice president of Harps' Food Stores, a grocery chain based in Springdale, Ark.

WHOLESALE

\ JEFF JONES has joined the sales staff of Williams Supply Inc., a wholesale electrical company. Jones brings to his position experience in contractor and industrial markets. His territory will cover Southwest Virginia.
