ROANOKE TRIPS W&L IN SOCCER

Dustin Fonder's penalty kick 13 minutes into the game proved to be the only goal, and Roanoke College held on to defeat Washington and Lee 1-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday. Goalkeeper Rick Keeley recorded the shutout for the Maroons (7-1 overall, 4-0 ODAC). The Generals are 2-5 and 1-1.

In other college action:

In Towson, Md., Pat Coyle scored two first-half goals to lead host Towson State to a 3-0 Big South Conference men's soccer victory over Radford University. The Tigers (4-3, 2-1) outshot Radford (0-8-1, 0-2) 18-7.

At Ferrum, Matt Cotten scored two goals to lead Christopher-Newport to a 5-1 win over Ferrum in a Dixie Conference men's soccer match. Will Councill had the only goal for Ferrum (1-5, 0-2). Christopher-Newport is 6-2 overall, 1-1 in the Dixie.

In Radford, Sue Williams and Jennifer Capece had two goals each, and Radford went on to whip Georgia Southern 7-0 in a women's non-conference soccer match. Radford, at 7-0, is off to the best start in school history.

In Greensboro, UNC Greensboro scored five goals in the first half, and went on to blank Virginia Tech 6-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game. Margaret Malloy knocked in two goals for the Spartans (4-4). The Hokies (3-5) had only three shots on goal.

Washington and Lee scored three goals in the final five minutes of the first half and beat Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 in a women's Old Dominion Athletic Conference soccer match. It is the first time the Generals (5-1, 3-0) have beaten Virginia Wesleyan (1-6, 1-1). Jenni Grant, Cordina Hankins and Kate Stimeling scored for the Generals.

In Lexington, Glenville State won the two-day Washington and Lee Fall Golf Classic by 16 strokes over the host team. Gary O'Flaherty of Glenville State won the individual title with a 36-hole score of 151, one stroke ahead of Washington and Lee's Jimmy Kull, Virginia Wesleyan's Brian Winston and Glenville State's Michael Barrett.
