LIBERTY LOSES TO DIVISION II POWER

Mike Campolo scored two touchdowns and the Indiana, Pa., defense grabbed three interceptions Saturday as the Division II powerhouse defeated nationally ranked Division I-AA Liberty 23-7.

Indiana (4-0) got field goals of 30, 31 and 32 yards from Michael Geary and touchdown runs of 3 yards and 1 yard from Campolo. Indiana is ranked No. 7 in Division II. Liberty (3-1) is ranked No. 15 in Division I-AA.

Liberty quarterbacks were 27 of 50 passing for 223 yards and were sacked five times.

The Flames' only score came on their first possession. After recovering a fumble on its own 36, Liberty drove 64 yards in eight plays capped by Adrian Cherry's 1-yard plunge. In the second half, the Flames got past midfield only twice.

Michael Mann led Indiana with 127 yards on 29 carries. Quarterback Scott Woods was 11-of-23 for 169 yards and one interception.

Cherry had 88 yards on 19 carries for Liberty.

Villanova 7

RICHMOND - Scott Burton recovered a fumble in the end zone and intercepted two passes as the Spiders capitalized on seven Villanova turnovers to beat the Wildcats in the Yankee Conference.

Richmond (3-1 overall, 2-1 Yankee Conference) ended a five-game losing streak against Villanova (1-2, 0-2).

After a scoreless first quarter, Maurice Glenn intercepted an Erik Pearson pass giving Richmond the ball at its own 11. A 47-yard pass from Greg Lilly to Jason Rydalch highlighted an 11-play, 89-yard drive that ended with Jon Strashensky's 1-yard touchdown run.

In the third quarter, Villanova had the ball at its 4-yard line following a punt with 6:17 remaining. Pearson, a redshirt freshman, fumbled in the end zone and Burton recovered for a touchdown.

Richmond scored on its next possession going 86 yards in five plays. Again a Lilly-to-Rydalch pass for 41 yards keyed the drive. Uly Scott scored on a 13-yard run.

The Wildcats scored with 8:06 remaining in the game on a 1-yard run by Kevin Mosley.

Pearson was intercepted three times in the fourth quarter, twice by Burton. Pearson was 27-of-56 for 334 yards. Straughn Lumpkin caught seven passes for 126 yards.

Scott led the Spiders with 112 yards on 14 carries and caught four passes for 44 yards. Lilly was 15-of-23 for 221 yards, with Rydalch catching four for 119 yards.

Jacksonville State 14

HARRISONBURG - Mike Cawley threw touchdown passes of 5 and 36 yards as the Dukes whipped Jacksonville State.

After Bill Johnson blocked a first-quarter punt in the end zone for a touchdown, James Madison (2-2) tacked on 14 points in the second quarter. The first score was a 5-yard pass from McCawley to Ed Perry; the second a 1-yard plunge by Kelvin Jeter.

Sandwiched between was Sean Richardson's 1-yard touchdown run for Jacksonville State (2-2).

In the third quarter, Cawley hit David McLeod with a 36-yard touchdown pass. A 3-yard run by Steve Agee in the final quarter capped the scoring for James Madison.

Cawley completed nine of 20 passes for 227 yards and two interceptions. Jeter led the rushing attack with 47 yards on 12 carries.

\ William and Mary 45

Harvard 17

WILLIAMSBURG - Shawn Knight threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Tribe rolled over the Crimson.

Knight completed 10 of 17 attempts for 219 yards as William and Mary (2-2) rolled up 429 yards in total offense. He had scoring passes of 39 yards to Mike Hamlin, and 58 and 25 yards to Terry Hammons in the first half. In the fourth quarter, Knight scored on a 13-yard run.

Harvard (1-1) scored on a 8-yard pass from Mike Giardi to Nick Issacson and a 2-yard run by Giardi, both in the first half. A 32-yard field goal with no time remaining in the game by Mark Hall capped the scoring for Harvard.

Giardi was sacked four times by the Tribe defense while completing 11 of 29 passes for 157 yards. Harvard was limited to 277 yards of offense.

Derek Fitzgerald rushed for 117 yards and one touchdown, an 8-yarder, on 18 carries for W&M, and Andy Ruckman recovered a fumble in the end zone for another Tribe score. Chris Dawson had a 26-yard field goal.

\ Hampton 27, Grambling St. 26: At East Rutherford, N.J., freshman Malcolm Benson blocked an extra point and a field goal in the fourth quarter to help the unbeaten Pirates beat Grambling in the 23rd annual Whitney M. Young Memorial Classic.

Hampton (4-0) dominated the first half and opened a 27-14 lead only to see Grambling rally in the second half, setting the stage for Benson's timely blocks.

The Tigers (1-2) started their comeback in the third period when Gilad Landau cut the gap to 27-20 with field goals of 45 and 24 yards.

A 59-yard touchdown pass from Kendrick Nord to Tyrone Jones with 13:24 in the fourth quarter pulled Grambling to 27-26. But Benson raced in from the left side to block's Landau's conversion attempt.

Grambling appeared to be on the verge of scoring the winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter when it drove to the Pirates' 7. But the Hampton defense stiffened, forcing Landau to come on and attempt a 22-yard field goal.

But Benson spoiled the party again and kept legendary Grambling coach Eddie Robinson from winning his 383rd collegiate game by sweeping in again to block the kick.

\ Emory & Henry 27, Davidson 0: At Emory, Charlie Cole scored two touchdowns and the Wasps' defense held Davidson to only 1 yard rushing.

Emory & Henry (4-0) rolled up 230 yards on the ground. Cole, who scored on a 92-yard run in the fourth quarter, had 119 yards on nine carries.

Davidson (1-2) gained its yardage through the air, picking up 178 yards. The Wildcats turned the ball over six times - four interceptions and two fumbles - to the Emory & Henry defense, which permitted a single yard on 36 carries.

\ Hampden-Sydney 20, Guilford 7: At Greensboro, N.C., Cetric Gayles ran for 110 yards and one touchdown, and Robert Thompson rushed for 94 yards and another score to lead Hampden-Sydney to victory.

Gayles went over the 2,000-yard career rushing mark for the Tigers (2-1, 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference).

Guilford (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) scored first when Sean Ross ran 3 yards to cap a 9-play, 80-yard drive with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

Hampden-Sydney responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Wes Andrews to Aaron Walters with 12:25 left in the second quarter. The Tigers took the lead for good on Thompson's 2-yard touchdown run with 2:23 left in the first half.

\ Bridgewater 16, Clinch Valley 7: At Wise, tailback Ronnie Howard rushed for 169 yards on 38 carries and scored a touchdown as Bridgewater (1-2, 1-1) defeated Clinch Valley (2-2, 0-1).

\ Virginia St. 30, Bowie St. 7: At Ettrick, Donald Wheeler scored two touchdowns on passes of 9 and 64 yards from Gregory Clark as Virginia State (4-0, 3-0) rolled over Bowie State (0-4, 0-3) in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Clark completed 19 of 30 passes for 266 yards.

\ Morgan St. 38, Virginia Union 21: At Richmond, backup quarterback Maurice Chase passed for 282 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as Morgan State (2-2) scored 21 points in the second half to beat Virginia Union (1-3). Trailing 21-10 with 11 seconds remaining in the half, Chase hit Otis Covington with a 5-yard scoring pass. In the second half, Covington threw scoring passes of 6 yards to Covington, and 12 yards to Jesse Humphries.

\ Norfolk St. 40, Elizabeth City St. 12: At Norfolk, Ricky Wood ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns as Norfolk State (1-3, 1-3) scored 32 points in the second half to dump CIAA rival Elizabeth City State (0-4, 0-3).
