WILLIAM BYRD BEATS MARTINSVILLE 67-60

Kelli Runyon scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as visiting William Byrd defeated Martinsville 67-60 in a non-district girls' basketball game Monday night.

The teams played evenly through the first half, with the Bulldogs (5-3) ahead 33-32 at halftime. The Terriers trailed by 10 in the third quarter but outscored Martinsville 28-10 in the fourth as Bulldogs missed eight free throws in the last period.

Jaclyn Banks led William Byrd with 15 points and Kristi Dyer added 13. Cathy Smith had 11 points.

Sam Ferguson led all scorers with 19 points, and Keenya Hairston had 17 for Martinsville. \

Northside 50

Glenvar 40

Early full-court pressure and late free-throw shooting carried the Vikings to a non-district victory over the host Highlanders.

Michelle Orlando finished with 12 points for Northside (4-4). She scored five points in Northside's 18-point second quarter, and in the fourth quarter she went 4-for-5 on free throws as the team went 8-for-12 to finish the game.

Amanda Kennedy had 15 points for Glenvar (6-2), and Marilea Hale had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Northside forced several turnovers that helped the Vikings rally from a 10-6 first-quarter deficit to a 24-20 halftime lead. The Vikings had eight baskets, including two 3-pointers, in the quarter. \

Salem 61

Christiansburg 51

Shelley Johnson scored 18 points and Heather Moore chipped in 17 as the Spartans defeated the Demons in a non-district game.

Tina Slate and Marilyn Huang added 10 points each as Salem sank 76 percent of its free throw attempts.

Rebecca McNeil led Christiansburg with 19 points. \

Union (W.Va.) 58

Craig County 36

UNION, W.Va. - Three players scored in double digits as the Red Devils crushed the Rockets for a non-district victory.

Chrissy Robertson scored 24 points to lead Craig County (2-3). The Rockets were missing two starters, Laura Nelson and Bonnie Boardwine, who averages 11 points per game. Nelson was ejected during the game and Boardwine has been ill.
