FLOYD ROUTS AUBURN

Floyd County opened with a 24-5 first quarter and went on to whip visiting Auburn 74-54 in a Mountain Empire District girls' basketball game on Thursday night.

Floyd County (10-1 overall, 8-0 district), ranked fourth in Timesland, had four players score in double figures and was led by Lynette Nolley's 18 points and nine rebounds.

Auburn hung tough after the miserable first quarter but never could close the gap. Angie Simpkins led the Eagles with 16 points.

\ Blacksburg 65\ Northside 45

BLACKSBURG - Meredith Braine scored 18 points, and Mary Thorn had 10 assists and eight points as the third-ranked Indians rolled over the visiting Vikings (4-4) in a non-district game.

Blacksburg (9-1) led by four points at halftime and took control with 41 points in the second half. Four Indians scored 10 points or more.\ Radford 40\ Salem 30

RADFORD - The Bobcats raced to a 32-11 lead at halftime and coasted to a non-district victory. Jenny Bishop led Radford (2-9) with 14 points and Charlee Taylor added 10. Salem got a game-high 18 points from Shellie Johnson. \ James River 52\ Craig County 28

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets turned the ball over 21 times, and the Knights capitalized by winning big in a Pioneer District game. James River (4-5, 3-0) was led by Angie Johnson's 19 points and Teresa Hickman's 16. The Knights (2-4, 1-2) were led by Chrissy Robertson's 16 points.

\ Shawsville 65\ Rocky Gap 52

SHAWSVILLE - Kelley Ryan and Brandy Alexander combined to score 10 straight points midway through the third quarter as the host Shawnees won a Mountain Empire District game.

Shawsville (5-4, 5-3) led by 10 at halftime, but Rocky Gap (6-3, 5-3) tied the game in the third after making the first five baskets of the second half.

Ryan, Alexander and Robin Burdette combined to score 53 of Shawsville's points.

\ Galax 58\ Fort Chiswell 45

MAX MEADOWS - Jacklyn Dickens scored 11 of her game-high 22 points in the second quarter as the Maroon Tide built a comfortable lead en route to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Galax (5-3, 5-2) outscored the Pioneers 25-13 in the second quarter to take a 35-21 lead at halftime. Tammy Cox added 11 points for the winners.

Fort Chiswell (4-5, 4-4) got 11 points from Chasity Wright.

\ Narrows 54\ Bland 24

NARROWS - The Green Wave bolted to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Suzanne Webb and Melinda Freeman had 12 points each for Narrows (4-5, 3-5).

Bland got 16 points from Rachel French.

\ Staunton River 52\ Brookville 43

LYNCHBURG - Deena Mitchell made six of nine free throws in the final two minutes to lead the Golden Eagles past the Bees in a Seminole District contest.

Kim English led Staunton River (7-1) with 13 points.
