USA BOXING STARTS PROGRAM FOR WOMEN

Women's boxing got a boost from the organization that sends American boxers to the Olympics.

USA Boxing said it would start registering female amateur boxers nationwide to compete against other females in sanctioned bouts.

Women's boxing is excluded from the Olympics and officials said the new program would be aimed initially at recreational programs.

"USA Boxing recognizes that with the wave of interest in boxing as a fitness regimen, this program could grow significantly in the future," said Jerry Dusenberry, USA Boxing's president.

Paraguay beat host Scotland in the opening round of the $1.5 million Dunhill Cup golf tournament when Raul Fretes won his match by rolling in a 35-foot putt at the 18th hole at St. Andrews, Scotland.

Fretes edged Colin Montgomerie by one stroke. Montgomerie lost the last three holes and surrendered a two-stroke lead with five to play.

The victory by the 500-1 shot South Americans ranks as one of the biggest upsets in international golf.

The U.S. team of John Daly, Payne Stewart and Fred Couples beat Wales 3-0 and will play Paraguay today.
