SALEM USES STRONG QUARTER TO DUMP ALLEGHANY

Heather Moore scored 25 points, including seven in a big second quarter, as Salem turned back Alleghany 64-55 in a Blue Ridge District girls' basketball game Thursday night.

Shelly Johnson added 19 points and Tina Slate had 12 for Salem (10-4 overall, 3-1 in the district).

Alleghany, which failed to convert inside opportunities, was led by Nicole Curtis, Tricia Rice and Andrea Moore. Each scored 14 points for the Mountaineers (9-5, 1-3).

\ Glenvar 48\ Bath County 24

Marilea Hale scored 22 points, and the Highlanders overcame cold shooting and a sluggish start to put away the Chargers in the Pioneer District.

Glenvar (11-3, 7-0) only led 28-20 after three quarters, but the Highlanders had as many baskets in the final period as they had mustered in the previous three. Toree Morris added 10 points for Glenvar.

\ William Byrd 65\ Rockbridge County 14

LEXINGTON - The Terriers took a 25-4 halftime lead and coasted to the Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Byrd blasted Rockbridge County (5-9, 0-4) in the third quarter with 29 points. Cathy Smith led the Terriers (10-3, 3-0) with 17 points.

Craig County 51\ Highland 38

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets converted turnovers into points early in the game and ran off with a Pioneer District victory over the Rams.

Junior Chrissy Robertson had 14 of her 18 points in the first quarter, when Craig County outscored Highland 23-7. Crystal Spangler added six of her 11 points in the period.

Bonnie Boardwine added 13 points for the Rockets (4-7, 3-5).

Highland (2-10, 1-7) was led by senior Amy Arbaugh with 15 points.
