EXPRESS DERAILED BY MONARCHS IN PRESEASON BATTLE

Center Dan Gravelle scored on a short-handed breakaway with less than six minutes left as the Greensboro Monarchs outfought the Roanoke Express 6-4 on Thursday night in a penalty-marred East Coast Hockey League preseason game.

With ECHL Commissioner Pat Kelly watching from the press box, game officials whistled the two teams for more than 30 penalties, including four misconducts - two against each team.

After a penalty- and fight- marred second period, Greensboro led 4-3. Dave "Moose" Morissette provided the bulk of the fighting, tangling first with left wing Dan Sawyer, then with Osborne and finally with right wing Ray Alcindor before "The Moose" was given a game misconduct.

\ ICE CHIPS: Two more cuts and another unexpected defection has trimmed the Express' training-camp roster to 24 players. Express coach Frank Anzalone waived a pair of forwards - Jan Michalec of the Czech Republic and Chris Williams, the son of former NHL star Dave "Tiger" Williams. Also, defenseman Todd Coopman has left the team for "personal reasons." Team officials said Coopman is expected to rejoin Roanoke. Forward Mike Sanderson quit the team earlier in the week, hoping to regain his job with Fort Worth of the Central Hockey League. Anzalone must pare the roster to the regular-season limit of 18 before 5 p.m. Monday. . . . The Express completes its three-game preseason schedule at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Roanoke Civic Center against Knoxville. Highlighting the Cherokees' visit will be the appearance of goalie Manon Rheaume, the first woman to play in a pro hockey game. It's not known whether Rheaume, who is under contract with Atlanta of the International Hockey League, will see action. . . . All tickets for Saturday's game are $4.
