BASSETT TURNS BACK MARTINSVILLE 52-49

Kim Hairston made six of eight free throws in the fourth quarter Thursday night to seal a 52-49 Piedmont District victory for top-ranked Bassett over Martinsville in high school girls' basketball.

Hairston finished with a team-high 22 points. Laurie Wimbush and Amy Barker added 11 points each for Bassett.

Martinsville (10-4, 10-2) was led by Keenya Hairston with 21 points and Tresita Holland with 10.

\ William Byrd 65\ Rockbridge County 14

LEXINGTON - William Byrd jumped to a 25-4 halftime lead and coasted the rest of the way in a 65-14 Blue Ridge District win over Rockbridge County.

Byrd blasted Rockbridge County (5-9, 0-4) in the third quarter with 29 points. Cathy Smith led the Terriers (10-3, 3-0) with 17 points. Nine Terriers scored in the game.

Craig County 51\ Highland 38

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets converted turnovers into points early in the game and ran off with a Pioneer District victory over the Rams.

Junior Chrissy Robertson scored 14 of her 18 points in the first quarter, when Craig County outscored Highland 23-7. Crystal Spangler added six of her 11 points in the quarter.

Bonnie Boardwine added 13 points for the Rockets (4-7, 3-5).

Highland (2-10, 1-7) was led by senior Amy Arbaugh with 15 points.

\ Giles 47\ Bland 41

BLAND - The Spartans rallied from a 10-point deficit behind Heather Matlock and Tamika Saunders as they defeated the Rockets in the Mountain Empire District.

Matlock scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half and Saunders scored 10 of her 14 for Giles.

Rachel French scored a game-high 24 points for Bland and Pachess Umbarger added 11.

\ Salem 64\ Alleghany 55

COVINGTON - Heather Moore scored 25 points, including seven in a big second quarter, as the Spartans turned back the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game.

Shelly Johnson added 19 and Tina Slate 12 for Salem (10-4, 3-1).

Alleghany, which failed to convert underneath the basket, was led by Nicole Curtis, Tricia Rice and Andrea Moore. Each scored 14 points for the Mountaineers (9-5, 1-3).
