S.C. ATTORNEY GENERAL: FLAG SHOULD BE REMOVED

South Carolina should stop flying the Confederate battle flag atop the Statehouse, the state attorney general said in an opinion Monday.

The opinion could help those who say the flag, flown alongside the U.S. and official state flags, represents slavery and the legacy of the Civil War in a state where the population is about 30 percent black.

Attorney General Travis Medlock recommended that the Legislature's Statehouse Committee remove the flag because the state has "no abiding legal authority to fly the Confederate flag on the Statehouse dome." - Associated Press
