KEYDETS LAST IN SOUTHERN CONFERENCE POLL

Defending champion Tennessee-Chattanooga has been picked to win the 1993-94 Southern Conference men's basketball championship, according to a preseason media poll.

The poll was announced Wednesday at the conference's annual basketball tip-off.

The Moccasins (26-7, 16-2) were also named to win the league by the conference coaches and sports information directors. Marshall was third with 211 points, followed by Georgia Southern (197), Davidson (141), Appalachian State (138), Furman (133), The Citadel (99), Western Carolina (55), and VMI (39).

Patrick Henry's girls tennis team routed Cave Spring 8-1 Wednesday at River's Edge to win the Roanoke Valley District championship. Patrick Henry, 10-0, faces E.C. Glass Nov. 9 in Woodbridge at the Northwest Region tournament. Four of the nine matches Wednesday went three sets. Cave Spring finished 7-3.

Matt Bennett's penalty kick in the second half gave Radford a 1-0 Big South Conference soccer victory over UNC Asheville, which had a point-blank shot saved by Radford's Chris Barrett and another shot hit the crossbar in the final minute. Radford is 4-12-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the league. UNCA is 6-12, 1-7. Radford played the final five minutes one man short after John Tierney was ejected with a red card.

Daniella Giusto registered her school-record ninth shutout of the season as Ferrum defeated Meredith 5-0 in a women's soccer game in Raleigh, N.C. Carrie Early had a goal and an assist for the Panthers (10-5-1), and Rachel Weber scored her team-leading 16th goal of the season.
