ROANOKE BOY, 13, SAYS HE WAS CUT IN STRUGGLE

A 13-year-old boy told Roanoke police he was cut on the hand as he struggled to prevent a man he believed was intoxicated from driving.

Lee Anthony Gates of Orange Avenue Northwest said the man pulled a knife and cut him when Gates tried to keep him from driving Sunday afternoon.

David Wayne Crump, 39, of Syracuse Avenue Northwest was charged with malicious wounding.

Gates was one of three people stabbed in Roanoke over the weekend. In other police reports:

Richard C. Jones, 49, of 19th Street Southeast told police he was stabbed in the face outside a Southeast Roanoke restaurant Friday night.

Jones, who was treated at Community Hospital, said he did not want to press charges. About an hour later, police were called back to the restaurant. The owner told them two men had come in asking for the stabbing suspect, who was then taken outside and beaten.

Responding to a stabbing report on Francis Drive Northwest early Sunday, police found the victim walking down the street. Alexander Leon Grant, 26, had been stabbed in the left side. Grant told police he knew who had attacked him but did not want to file charges. He was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
