MONTGOMERY, RADFORD UW HEADS TO GOAL

The United Way of Montgomery County and Radford is more than halfway to its 1993 fund-raising goal.

The campaign had raised more than $400,000 as of Friday. This year's goal is $780,000.

Two companies have been leading the charge in this year's campaign.

Employees at New River Industries of Radford raised $22,324 - a 43 percent increase over last year's campaign, said Kerry Dodson, the United Way's publicity coordinator.

The industry's corporate gift was $7,000, a 40 percent increase over last year's donation.

In Blacksburg, Litton Poly-Scientific's employees have donated $24,594 for a 43 percent increase over last year's campaign. And Litton's corporate gift was $4,000 - a third more than last year's.

At Virginia Tech, the Student Service Council has set a $2,500 goal. Such service organizations as Alpha Phi Omega and the German Club are raising money through various campus activities. The campaign is one of the few student campaigns in the country, local United Way staff said.

``Once again, people throughout Montgomery County and Radford are showing their willingness to give to neighbors in our community,'' said Bonnie Svrcek, campaign chairwoman and assistant town manager for Blacksburg.

A new leadership giving program - recognizing contributions of $500 or more - has reached half of its participation goal of 75 people. The Wings of Leadership Society is headed by Don Wells of Pargo's restaurant.

Several companies, such as Radford Community Hospital, Tetra and Plymouth Inc., just started their fund-raising efforts. Corning, Unimet and Electro-Tec will begin their campaigns later this month.

The state employees' campaign, which is also a part of the total United Way campaign, is also nearing its goal.

Radford University has reached 80 percent of its $30,000 goal, while Virginia Tech reports 61.3 percent of its $190,000 goal.
