FIRES INJURE 1 MAN, RAZE MOBILE HOME, CENTURY-OLD HOUSE

Firefighters and scanner frequencies were kept busy Friday night in three separate incidents.

One man was injured when a mobile home burned to the ground, a 100-year-old house was destroyed, and a storage structure received major damage.

The mobile home, in Pine Tree Village Trailer Park off Rutrough Road in Roanoke County, was engulfed by flames within minutes just before 11 p.m., according to witnesses at the scene.

Fire Chief Gene Wagner said the mobile home was owned by Jerry Conner, who was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with burns to his arm. Two others who were inside the trailer were uninjured.

Wagner said the cause of the fire had not been determined.

In Montgomery County, an Ironto home - which formerly was a Methodist church - was destroyed by fire.

Elliston Fire Chief Malvin Wells said Elliston, Riner and Christiansburg firefighters responded to the scene at 5:47 p.m. The single-family dwelling, at 3316 Ironto Road, was more than 100 years old, Wells said.

The house is owned by Eldred and Wanda Hall of Ironto, Wells said.

No one was in the house at the time of the fire.

Wells said fire officials suspect the fire started near the chimney, but an investigation is continuing.

In Roanoke, a storage building on the corner of Jackson Street and Norfolk Avenue Southwest was gutted by a blaze just before 7 p.m. The building was located in a section of houses condemned several years ago, said District Fire Chief Phillip Taylor.

The owner of the building had yet to be identified by fire officials late Friday.

Taylor said the cause of the fire - which started on the outside of the structure - is being handled as suspicious in nature.
