"The Nutcracker, a ballet about Clara and her journey to the Sugarplum Fairy's enchanted kingdom, with a musical score by Tchaikovksy, will be presented at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium, Dec. 18 at 2 and 8 p.m., and Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.

Participating will be the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Southwest Virginia Ballet and Roanoke College Preparatory Division of Music Children's Choir.

If you aren't able to attend a live production of this famous holiday classic, you might catch a new movie starring Macaulay Culkin, the young boy who starred in the "Home Alone" movies. George Balanchine's "The Nutcracker" stars Culkin as the Nutcracker Prince and is playing at Valley View 6.

Speaking of movies, 'tis the season for some of the year's best. Opening between now and Christmas are several sure to appeal to children.

Among those expected to draw large crowds of the younger set are the sequels to "Sister Act," "Wayne's World," "Addams Family" and "Beethoven."
