ROANOKE BANK ROBBED

The Crestar bank branch on Melrose Avenue Northwest was robbed just before noon Tuesday, bringing to two the number of bank heists in less than two weeks. Police believe the same man is responsible for both crimes.

The other robbery was Nov. 22 at the Roanoke branch of the First National Bank of Rocky Mount on Hershberger Road Northwest.

In both instances, the suspect told tellers he was armed with a gun, but kept his hand in his coat pocket while demanding money.

Tuesday, the man took an undisclosed amount of cash from a teller, placed a hood over his head and began to run toward Virginia Avenue Northwest, police said.

The robberies are being investigated by Roanoke police and the FBI.
